Mystery Pink Ooze on Remote Tasmanian Coast Raises Concerns of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation
Authorities in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with some scientists concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
Broad Appearance Across Shore
The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a stretch of a southern bay about 37 miles south of the city. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on parts of Little Roaring Beach and an additional coastal site.
Samples Collected for Examination
Specimens have been gathered and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A official remarked that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in reaction to changes in food sources, temperature, precipitation or sunlight".

"You usually see a proliferation of this algae after a proliferation of something else, or something like a marine breeding," she added.
Demands for Investigation and Safety Concerns
A campaigner, who collected samples of the pink sludge in the state, commented it looked like the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and proposed the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, referring to comparable events in other places.
"So we needs to deliver a clear message here, the government and the environmental agency need to act to this. We need to examine the samples we've gathered and we need to notify the people here," she stated.
She said she had concerns for community health after noticing a tingling sensation along her arms and face while being exposed with contaminated seawater.

An conservation group has reported deceased sea creatures and expired organisms being found on the beach, with a longtime environmental campaigner labeling the situation as an "natural disaster" and calling on the state premier to inspect and "assume command the effort that authorities must be making".
