Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
