Charity Member Among Hurt in Synagogue Incident

A person hurt during Thursday's violent incident at a synagogue in Manchester was working with the Community Security Trust, an organization credited for preventing an even worse atrocity.

Familiar Presence of Helpers

The appearance of volunteers in the organization's high-visibility vests has become a common presence at Hebrew places of worship, schools, and other sites in the past few years.

Over many years, the group has also influenced public policy by monitoring and combating antisemitism, while additionally addressing hatred against other communities.

Increasing Antisemitic Incidents

Over the past 24 months since the October 7th, 2023 attacks in Israel and the start of the war in Gaza, the organization's personnel has increased by about a third against the backdrop of a surge in anti-Jewish crimes.

According to Home Office figures, there were over three thousand faith-based offenses aimed at Jewish people in the year to March 2024, an increase from 1,543 in the previous year.

Additional statistics from the CST, based on the number of antisemitic incidents reported to the group, recorded 1,521 such occurrences across the UK in the first half of this year.

Chart displays average number of bias-motivated offenses recorded per 10,000 people, categorized by the perceived religion of the affected individual.

Established Recording and Training

Although it attained non-profit organization in 1994, the CST and its forerunners have been documenting and publishing anti-Jewish event data in the UK since the 1980s.

Currently, its activities include over a hundred employees and two thousand dedicated helpers who undergo intensive instruction in subjects ranging from emergency medical care to performing protective tasks.

While its volunteers have been injured in the past, the severe injuries to a staff member in Manchester is considered the most serious to date.

Leadership Reaction and Security Arrangements

"We pray for his continuing recovery and salute the bravery of all those who assisted in halting the attacker from entering the shul," stated the organization's top leader.

The CST presence at locations often includes a combination of its own volunteers, such as educated members, as well as private security guards.

As a recipient of funding from the government, the trust distributes an £18m public funds that pays for professional security services.

These resources were utilized last year at sites encompassing two hundred nurseries, 260 Jewish temples, and fifty prominent community facilities.

The organization independently relies on donations.

Wider Initiatives and Collaborations

Not as apparent is the trust's broader efforts in training, advising on security, and its long-standing research into anti-Jewish sentiment from origins including far-right extremists and militant Islamist groups.

Its work in this sphere have contributed to legal proceedings such as the jailing in 2021 of a individual who was then one of the UK’s most active far-right anti-Jewish video streamers.

Counter-terrorism police were alerted to his actions by the CST.

The charity also works closely with allies including Tell Mama – the national project that documents and tracks anti-Muslim incidents in the UK, and which has referred to the CST’s work as "innovative."

Both are in a official collaboration with other anti-hate organizations as part of the Community Alliance to Combat Hate alliance.

Additional Initiatives and Public Involvement

CST’s work, which other communities have drawn on, also includes its guide for protective measures for religious sites.

In other areas, it runs customized teen safety courses for teenagers in partnership with Maccabi GB, under the Streetwise initiative.

Other work involves collaborations with the law enforcement and with MPs, while it holds frequent meetings with ministers and contributes to public strategies on anti-Jewish issues.

Although the trust serves the Jewish community, an organization called Shomrim also monitors anti-Jewish sentiment and works on behalf of ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities.
