‘After nearly destroying our world, the relatives are allies’: a gripping audio series featuring John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev’s relatives.

During the month of October 1962, the planet veered nearer toward annihilation more so than ever during modern times. This occurred following the discovery that a US reconnaissance plane discovered that Soviet nuclear weapon bases were being built in the island of Cuba, a mere 100 miles from the US mainland. In response, President John F Kennedy directed a naval task force to impose a maritime blockade encircling the island. The ensuing period constituted almost 14 days of extreme stress.

The Catastrophic Threat

The threat was clear. If President Kennedy, or the Soviet counterpart, Premier Khrushchev, initiated an attack on the other side, a chain reaction involving worldwide atomic attacks followed by retaliatory strikes could have ensued, casting humanity toward total ruination.

The October crisis has been examined extensively, in books, movies, and television programmes. However, for its third season, the BBC World Service podcast titled "The Bomb" presents a novel element into the story. The series is jointly hosted by Max Kennedy alongside Khrushchev's descendant, relatives belonging to the figures that, for two tense weeks, grasped the destiny of humanity within their grasp.

"What was the Soviet side thinking? What were the United States planning?" ponders Khrushcheva, the Soviet leader's great-granddaughter and an academic of international affairs.

In her view, the unique appeal of the podcast is its endeavor to question: "Why do nations detest one another to the point they confront each other?"

"It struck me how profound the fact that individuals have the potential to be allies or have the potential to be complete enemies," states Kennedy, son of RFK, related to JFK and currently a writer and lawyer. "We see this over and over in instances where countries enter into conflict, and it just illustrates the profound irrationality it is to engage in warfare."

The Precipice of Catastrophe

What’s notable about this event is that, because it transpired in the global spotlight, individuals worldwide could watch nearly as it happened as it crept towards catastrophe. Even so, the threat of destruction was more imminent than what most people understood at the time.

"The overwhelming majority among Kennedy's advisors were advocating for an airstrike and a ground invasion," says Max Kennedy. "If we had struck Cuba with the naval blockade, there is no question the Russians stationed there would have launched a tactical nuclear weapon at the American ships, and that would have destroyed our naval vessels as well as sunk our largest and most important fleet. In turn, the U.S. would have responded through massive retaliation that would have eradicated most life on Earth."

The fact it didn’t highlights the composure of both leaders, they managed to keep their heads and engaging in diplomacy when everyone around them demanded action. As a result, The Soviet premier removed the missiles from the Caribbean island and Kennedy (a fact not publicly disclosed then) withdrew his similar weapons based in Turkey. The sense of relief was worldwide, as was a feeling of hope.

The Different Perspective

Still, for those two weeks in October, the tension was palpable globally. The podcast's co-hosts came into the world in the years following the crisis, with Khrushcheva learned about it through the USSR's school curriculum, which presented a slightly different picture of what happened.

"As you mentioned your father remembers it, and it was a frightening time," Khrushcheva notes. "But in the Soviet Union, the public were largely unaware a great deal about it, because it was a tense situation, whereas in the Soviet Union the official line was that things are always wonderful or sunny."

Within Khrushchev’s family, though, it was distinct. "I was informed that it was a triumphant occasion for the USSR, as it was eyeball to eyeball. They were able to find a solution, thus didn’t start a global war, which was a positive thing," she continues. In the years to come, though, that perspective would not be shared by everybody. "For a long time in Russian politics, it was considered a defeat for Khrushchev, because he refrained from destroying America."

An Unlikely Partnership

The Bomb is so balanced , expertly crafted so much so that Nina quips she nearly forgot the known outcome. This effect is, in part, thanks to contributions from renowned scholars. Yet, really, the most significant aspect is the involvement of the descendants. Not so long ago, it was unthinkable for descendants of the leaders of America and the Soviet Union would appear together publicly. The fact that Max Kennedy and Nina Khrushcheva can do that, and exhibit such warmth with each other, has to be a symbol of optimism.

"We aren't the first," notes Nina. "Following 1991, my uncle moved to America and formed a close bond with Dwight Eisenhower’s children."

"But we were strangers prior to this project," clarifies Max. "That is unfortunate since we got along really well and now we are friends, something that is wonderful. Finally, after almost six decades of nearly annihilating the world, our lineages are now allies, suggesting the world is more secure, somewhat."

Modern Echoes with Current Perils

Or is it? Part of the reason this series seems so urgent is because we once again find ourselves in a perilous era. The Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than ever before, in part because world leaders don’t seem to be able to grasp
